The rate of \"I lost my journal\" is very low (one or two of 125 students). The students who made this claim most likely took them home, because many students asked to do so. Personalization is so important at this stage in their lives. Students in late childhood/early 10 or 11 are beginning to form their personalities, set goals and figure out how they fit into the world. My students were highly motivated to write when they found they could decorate their journals and that they would be safe here at school. Most students had not yet internalized the format and traditions of journal-writing (date, topic or name of books/source, writing daily and legibly). This exercise in journal writing is slowly helping students to internalize these writing/journaling traditions. Learning to write in a journal helps reluctant readers to translate what they have learned (read) into words after having reflected on their reading.","fullyFundedDate":1760454145396,"projectUrl":"project/a-reading-journal-4-me/9797086/","projectTitle":"A Reading Journal 4 Me","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Carter","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7991024_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1681353933498","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7991024"},{"teacherId":8393524,"projectId":9242311,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting this project! Because of your incredible generosity, the materials for my project, Help Reward My Students for Class Participation, have arrived, and our classroom is buzzing with motivation and positive behavior!\r\nIt's one thing to hear about a great idea for student support, but it's entirely another to watch students actively choose positive behavior because they know their efforts are valued. We were so excited to receive a generous stock of snacks and candy, which we are using for instant rewards and as prizes in our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) store.\r\nThe Impact on Motivation and Behavior\r\nThese aren't just treats—they are powerful incentives that reinforce positive classroom culture. Before this project, motivating students and providing meaningful, immediate rewards was a constant challenge. Your gift has given us the tools to celebrate success instantly and consistently.\r\nHere is a glimpse of what your donation made possible this week:\r\n•\tInstant Engagement & Participation: The ability to offer a small piece of candy or a snack for answering a tough question or helping a classmate has dramatically increased voluntary classroom participation. These quick rewards motivate even our most hesitant students to jump into the lesson.\r\n•\tPBIS Store Success: The snacks and candy stock our PBIS store, which is the cornerstone of our positive behavior program. Students earn points or tokens for following school rules, and they use these rewards to \"purchase\" items. Your donation keeps our store running, giving students a tangible goal and promoting long-term behavioral consistency.\r\n•\tBuilding Community: Sharing a small treat after a successful test or group activity helps build a positive, celebratory atmosphere. It strengthens the student-teacher and peer relationships, making our classroom a supportive and enjoyable environment.\r\nThis project has made managing the classroom more positive and focused. Because of you, every child is working toward clear goals, and we are celebrating positive choices all day long. Because of your incredible generosity, the materials for my project, Back to School Supplies Baby, have arrived, and our classroom is buzzing with creative energy!\r\nIt's one thing to receive a box of supplies, but it's entirely another to watch students' faces light up as they realize they have everything they need right at their desks. Before this project, many students struggled to participate fully because they lacked basic essentials or had to use worn-out, borrowed items. Your gift has eliminated that barrier instantly.\r\nHere is a glimpse of what your donation made possible this week:\r\n•\tSustained Writing & Reflection: Every student now has their own dedicated journal and notebook—no more shared or mismatched paper. This consistency allows us to build sustained writing habits and focus deeply on our assignments.\r\n•\tActive Collaboration: The dry erase markers have been a game-changer for small-group work. Students are solving math problems, mapping out arguments, and brainstorming ideas directly on their desks or small whiteboards, making learning immediate and collaborative.\r\n•\tCreative Confidence: The high-quality markers, colored pencils, and crayons are vital for visual learning. Students are using them to annotate texts, create concept maps, and design project-based learning displays. When they have quality materials, they take pride in their work.\r\n•\tReady for Learning: Having a plentiful supply of pencils, mechanical pencils, and paper means we start every day ready to learn. No instructional time is lost searching for a tool; all energy goes straight into the lesson. The folders and binder clips help us maintain organizational skills, which is crucial for success later in the year.\r\nThis project has removed stress from both the students and myself.
