Because of you, our students now have access to hands-on STEM learning experiences that are engaging, meaningful, and empowering.\r\n\r\nOur classroom serves middle school students, including many who receive special education services and English language support. With the materials you provided—cutting tools, sewing supplies, and equipment—students are now able to explore real-world skills through creative sewing projects. These hands-on activities allow them to design, measure, cut, and assemble their own creations while building important connections to math, engineering, and problem-solving.\r\n\r\nThe impact has been incredible. Students who often struggle in traditional academic settings are now actively engaged and excited to learn. Sewing has created a multi-sensory environment where they can follow step-by-step directions, strengthen fine motor skills, and build confidence through success. They are learning patience, teamwork, and independence while taking pride in completing projects they can see and use.\r\n\r\nFor many of our students, this is more than just a classroom activity, it's an opportunity to feel capable, creative, and successful. The moment the sewing machines and supplies arrived, students were filled with excitement and curiosity. Many of them had never seen a sewing machine up close, and for some, this is their first opportunity to learn how to sew. In a classroom where hands-on learning makes a meaningful difference, these materials instantly created a sense of engagement and anticipation. Students eagerly explored different types of fabrics (we received a donation of material from a local quilter) and tools, asked thoughtful questions, and began imagining what they could create. Their enthusiasm confirmed how much they value opportunities to learn by doing.\r\nWe are currently in the process of implementing our first structured projects, guiding students through foundational skills such as measuring fabric, understanding seam allowances, threading a machine, and following step-by-step directions. This project naturally integrates functional math skills as students measure, estimate, and calculate, while also incorporating artistic elements through fabric selection and design choices. Students are researching beginner-friendly sewing designs and exploring how patterns are created, which strengthens their technology and inquiry skills as part of this STEAM experience. The learning is multi-sensory and purposeful, allowing students to connect abstract academic concepts to real-world applications in a way that is meaningful and accessible.\r\nAs we continue building skills, our next steps include expanding into more detailed projects that require additional planning, precision, and problem-solving. We hope to gradually introduce collaborative opportunities and projects that have practical uses beyond the classroom. Our goal is for this experience to extend far beyond learning a single skill. Sewing encourages patience, perseverance, independence, and creative confidence. We believe these projects will help students become more self-sufficient while showing them that they are capable of designing and constructing something functional from start to finish. Your support has made it possible to bring engaging, hands-on STEAM learning into our classroom, and we are excited to see our students grow through this opportunity.","fullyFundedDate":1764785904294,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-sewing-creativity-skills-for/9935492/","projectTitle":"Hands-On Sewing: Creativity & Skills for Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McDonough","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4776131_orig.jpg?crop=470,470,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1627734507559","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4776131"},{"teacherId":9342342,"projectId":10103438,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity and commitment to helping our students at Jarrett Middle School not only endure hardships during extensive times of need, but allowing them to thrive and be successful with basic and advanced supplies that fuel their curiosity and willingness to learn. \r\n\r\nThe smiles on our students faces never cease to amaze me as they walk in to see brand new supplies, providing them the opportunity to learn in a safe and comfortable environment.
