When I was in Science class I learned to use the triple beam balance (TBB) to measure mass and I am now 50 years old. For years we have taught kids to use a TBB but is this what Scientists use in a professional lab setting? For years I was told that TBBs are more accurate than electronic scales and I listened to my teachers and believed it. Now my students are being tested on measuring mass and the tests incorporated electronic scales. My students are also expected to use electronic scales in other applications. My students have never used an electronic scale so how would they know how to use them. I am assuming we are still using TBB because of cost. Now electronic scales are affordable and accurate. I would like to do away with the old (TBB) and finally bring in new electronic scales for my students. One of the top 5 things we are focusing on in science this year is measurement and providing my students with the latest technology to measure mass would be awesome to prepare them for a future in technology.
