All my students love hands on learning and to understand vague topics like the structure of a DNA molecule is easier for them to understand if they can build a model that mimics the structure. Most of my students are English language Learners and I incorporate many labs into my science class to help them understand complex scientific concepts. The plastic model kits are sturdy and can be used multiple times by students not only this year but also in years to come. Also it is easier to clean these models because they are plastic since we now have to consistently disinfect everything in our class that students use for safety purposes. The Mud watt kits are great because students will learn about alternative energy sources and get to build a working cell that is powered by the electrons produced by bacteria in mud to create energy to light a small lightbulb . This will help them to see that bacteria around us can also create clean energy which is good for the planet. In other words I can tell them that most bacteria is helpful to us but this will help them to see it really is helpful. Only some bacteria is harmful. I do many labs and often students need to heat up test tubes, beakers, and flask but I only have one electric plate in my class and it prolongs labs because it takes time for many students to use one electric plate. For example when students were studying the Permeability of yeast cell membranes , there was a line of students waiting to heat up their cells in a solution and record results , so sometimes I had to keep a couple of students back to finish before they could go to their next class.
