Reading saved my life. Or more accurately, reading gave me the life I have today. I was one of those kids who always had his nose in a book. My dad would read to me every night before I went to sleep. Eventually I began reading on my own, using books to transport myself to other worlds through my imagination. In this way I have lived many lives, which inadvertently taught me lessons on how to live my own life, mostly on what it means to be human and treat others with kindness.
Buying books for students has been among the most guilt-free purchases I have ever made. I fully support the students' passion for reading, yet as a public school teacher, it has often made me broke. I need your help to keep my bookshelf stocked with the books the students want to read. Some of the books on my list are books that I have once had, but need a replacement due to students not returning them back to me. I'm okay with buying replacement books because I believe that we should have more books out there in the community.
Earlier today one of my 6th graders looked at my classroom bookshelf and said, "Thank you for having this series! Now I can come to your room to get the books." These small moments bring a great happiness to my life. Please help me continue to share in the joy of reading with my students.
