Before, many of our kids saw their English class books as something distant and unrelatable. Now, they're not just reading; they're connecting: When a book features a main character who looks like them, speaks like them, or deals with the challenges of their community, it creates an immediate \"mirror\" connection. Our students are jumping into discussions with energy, and their overall time spent reading has noticeably increased. Simply put: they actually want to read! I hope reading comprehension scores are improving because students are using their own deep \"funds of knowledge\"—the experiences they bring from their homes and neighborhoods—to understand complex plot points and themes. They are, in a sense, becoming experts on the texts, which builds confidence and academic muscle. This is the most crucial part. We are finding that the students who struggled the most are showing the greatest gains. By validating their experiences, we're removing barriers to learning and actively helping to close the persistent achievement gaps that hold many of our students back. With your help I hope to achieve all of these goals!
