Every morning the students come in, grab a snack, and settle into their warm-up activity, which focuses on morning journaling and a quick skills review. One morning last week, I watched a student who often arrives late and tired come in, choose a granola bar, and immediately sit down and begin writing about his goals for the day. It was such a simple moment, but it showed how meeting a basic need can completely shift a student's mindset and readiness to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen I first opened all the packages, they were soooo excited!!! After the screams and shrieks, one of my scholars quietly asked if the food was really for them. The sense of comfort and security in the room changed almost instantly.\r\n\r\nNow that students are arriving more focused and energized, we're diving deeper into our morning academic block. Our next step is to build consistency in reading fluency and writing stamina. Having breakfast available helps students start the day grounded, so we can make stronger progress with small-group reading, goal-setting journals, and our weekly challenges. This requires the headphones to have a microphone that the students can speak in to. These headphones really helped my students perform this part of the exam. I often use my space for Kindergarten students who require many of these private sessions throughout the school year.\r\n\r\nLastly the dividers have been perfect for testing larger groups during our state-wide assessment window. It is unbelievable how much these toys have made an impact on their goal progress inside and outside the therapy room. \r\n\r\nThe books have also been extremely beneficial. Every speech therapy session I start by reading a story. This allow students to learn new vocabulary but also gives them chances to answer wh questions, follow directions, retell a story, and recall important details. All of these skills carry over into the classroom and into their future life.
