As a school psychometrist, I work with students daily during evaluations and also welcome students into my room when they are having difficulty regulating their emotions or managing sensory needs in the classroom. The new sensory resources have given students additional ways to take a break, calm their bodies, and refocus when they feel overwhelmed. During evaluations, students sometimes become frustrated, anxious, or tired from working through challenging tasks. Having sensory items available allows them to take a short break, relax, and return to testing when they are ready. These tools also provide a welcoming space for students who need a quiet moment away from the demands of their classroom.\r\n\r\nThe students have been excited to explore the sensory materials and discover which tools help them feel calm and comfortable. It is wonderful to see students use the items to take a purposeful break and then return to their work feeling more settled and ready to try again. For some students, having something to squeeze, manipulate, or hold helps them manage restlessness and stay engaged. For others, the sensory tools offer a much-needed opportunity to reset when big emotions or sensory overload make learning difficult. Each student is different, so having a variety of resources helps me find strategies that best meet their individual needs.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, I will continue incorporating these tools into daily evaluations and using them to support students who visit my room when they need help regulating. My goal is to help students recognize when they need a break, learn which strategies work best for them, and build skills they can eventually use in their classroom. With our new shelf and cubbies students have been able to keep our stem bins clean and organized in their correct bins! They are enjoying being able to pick out what they want without having to move different boxes or hold the shelf from falling over. They have easy access to their favorite items and can be responsible for cleaning them up in a breeze! Being able to pick their item without messing with different boxes stacked has made this center more desired and available to the students!
