My English Language Learner students speak a variety of home languages including Spanish, Arabic, and Urdu. The majority of my students are from an area in northwestern Burma and speak the Zomi language. Many of these families are considered political refugees and have spent time in refugee camps in Malaysia and Thailand. Our school works hard to welcome these students and their families into our school community and help them with resources to ease the transition to their new home. We provide translators for communication with school personnel and translate information into their home language whenever possible. We provide a clothes closet to provide adequate clothing for the children, as well as sacks of food for weekends and school breaks for families in need.
