Again, the students were very excited to get to use the boards. Several mentioned how easy it was to write and erase their answers and I of course loved knowing that I would not have to be replacing expo markers and erasers anymore! \r\n\r\nWe played a \"Jeopardy\" type review game in class and every student was able to write their answers to show me what they knew. It was wonderful to see all students eagerly writing their answers to share their knowledge, especially the students who rarely volunteer to answer aloud in class. Seeing that made my day! My students use the ice to support hands-on investigations where temperature and phase changes are at the center of our learning. Instead of simply reading about how matter changes, students get to observe, measure, discuss, and make sense of these changes for themselves.\r\n\r\nWhen the ice maker arrived, my students were SO excited! They immediately wanted to know what we were going to investigate with all that ice. It was a fun reminder that sometimes the simplest classroom materials can create the biggest excitement for young scientists.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite moments has been using ice during investigations where students make observations about temperature changes and phase changes. Having a reliable source of ice means we can spend more time learning and less time trying to gather materials. Students are able to work collaboratively, collect evidence, and connect what they see happening in front of them to the science concepts we are studying.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue using the ice maker throughout our hands-on science investigations. Students will build on their observations to explain why and how matter changes, using evidence from their experiments. To utilize the magazines in the classroom, students are given time in class to read. Then, I simply ask students to share something interesting that they read.\r\n\r\nFor example, during a past reading session, students shared with the class about a multitude of interesting topics. Some students shared about an invention that a teenager engineered. Students reflected how they have the ability to make positive contributions to our world when they see a need arise. Other students shared about the debate on whether or not humans should be courteous and polite towards Alexa and Siri. That really spurred some interesting discussion on manners and courtesy. Other students read about jet packs which started a lively conversation on what it would look like if everyone rode their jet pack to each class. They were concerned that it might be a bit chaotic, since the hallways can get crowded with bulky jet packs and they were unsure of the risks with students potentially flying in different directions. These were just a few of the conversations that were sparked from the students reading their magazines.\r\n\r\nThe time the students spent reading and discussing their magazines articles was enjoyable and students were engaged. They were extremely appreciative that instead of having to complete an online reading practice program to better their reading skills, they could simply read. All in all, thank you for allowing our students the opportunity to read using Scholastic magazines.
