Many of our families face financial hardships on a daily basis so asking the students who elected to take dance as a part of Musical Theatre for monies was not practical. However, these students showed up every day and put their heart into learning choreography. Some rehearsed in sneakers, some in footies, and others in whatever socks they had worn that day. We did not tell the students about the project because we did not want them to be disappointed or project a lack of funding onto themselves or their abilities. \r\n\r\nYou cannot imagine their reaction when we lined the first group of dancers up and asked them all to take off their shoes. One-by-one each name was called and each dancer was asked to search the box for their size. Moments of pure joy ensued as each dancer put on their pair of shoes for the first time. Immediately the tone of the room became more serious. More professional. More prestigious. Rehearsal looked different. Felt different. Confidence levels shot up. Willingness to try improved.\r\n\r\nAnd ... when the students learned that strangers cared enough about their productions to want them to perform in real professional dance shoes the students were stunned. Humbled, and honored. They come to class each day ready to rehearse. To leap. To twirl. I was delighted that my Donors Choose Project: Empower Students Through the Power of Color was fully funded through your generous donations! \r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, students in grades 9-12 (roughly 1200) have benefited from seeing visuals for displays: photographs, fliers, and additional graphics in engaging colors since I received the color printer and laminating machine. One of our projects involved a popcorn theme as we worked to recruit underclassmen to apply for and join the Early College Program at Crispus Attucks High School and it was incredibly effective and engaging to be able to print and laminate various visuals (popcorn buckets, popcorn kernels, and other types of visuals to be displayed in several high traffic areas: the cafeteria, the main window of the Future Center, and outside of specific classrooms with the targeted student population. \r\n\r\nHaving access to a color printer and laminating machine both provide not only higher levels of engagement for student interaction and education, but provide greater longevity to the materials we design and utilize. The moment they opened the boxes and saw the fresh boards, weighted pieces, and instructional guides, their faces lit up. Many of them immediately wanted to set up matches, while others carefully examined the pieces and asked questions about strategy. It created an instant buzz of curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the room.\r\nWe began using the materials right away during our after-school chess club meetings. One specific project we launched was a \"Strategy in Action\" challenge. Students were paired into teams and asked to study classic openings, then practice and analyze their games. They recorded their moves, reflected on mistakes, and discussed alternative strategies. The new boards allowed multiple games to run simultaneously, giving every student hands-on time rather than waiting for a turn. This increased engagement and participation significantly.\r\n\r\nAcademically, these materials have strengthened critical thinking, problem-solving, and patience. Students are learning to plan ahead, anticipate consequences, and adapt their strategies—skills that directly support math reasoning and reading comprehension. They are also developing perseverance and sportsmanship.\r\n\r\nNext, students will begin a mini-tournament where they apply what they've learned about openings, middle-game tactics, and endgame strategies. They'll also practice peer coaching, helping one another analyze moves and grow together.\r\n\r\nHaving a company like Panda support our students means so much. It shows our students that their interests matter and that their community believes in their potential. Your generosity has created opportunities for growth, confidence, and meaningful learning experiences that will stay with them far beyond the chessboard.","fullyFundedDate":1769177503753,"projectUrl":"project/chess-club/10012044/","projectTitle":"Chess Club","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Christenberry","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5828680_orig.jpg?crop=1512,1512,x0,y120&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1776693921302","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-christenberry"},{"teacherId":10087790,"projectId":9488275,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donations to the CCMA class at Crispus Attucks High School. We use it to keep track of assignments and important dates, but it has also become a way to celebrate student birthdays together. I also used the magnetic whiteboard stickers to create a whiteboard space on one of our bulletin boards, giving a place for important information and bathroom sign-up.\r\n\r\nThe easel pads have been especially useful for group activities and creative projects.
