To complement the reading of this fiction book, my students completed a dinosaurs research project. Afterwards, they made beautiful clay models of their favorite dinosaurs and they proudly shared them with their parents. \r\n\r\nThe materials that my class received with your donations have become a great motivator for my students. At the beginning of each unit of study they are already anticipating the final STEAM project, which builds excitement for the learning process. Right now the excitement is building for the final story-telling project: cardboard puppets, which they will construct and decorate with the markers and paints purchased with your donations. We are also preparing for our Earth Day STEAM exhibition, and we will be using our special glow in the dark paint and button makers for those projects.\r\n\r\nWe are so very grateful for your support of our Donor's Choose project. Instead of just answering a prompt on a screen, students used their notebooks to create \"Character Maps,\" connecting quotes from the text to their own hand-drawn illustrations. Just last week, while it was far too cold to head to the playground, I watched a group of students who typically struggle with social cues huddled over a strategy game, laughing and negotiating rules with incredible patience. We have started using the tables & chairs during snack time, center time, and small-group learning. Because the tables are the right size for little bodies and the chairs are stable and comfortable, students can focus more easily — whether they're building with blocks, working on fine motor skills, coloring, or exploring puzzles and manipulatives.\r\n\r\nOne recent moment really stood out: during writing time, five students gathered around one of the new rectangular tables. They leaned in close, sharing paint and crayons, chatting excitedly as they worked together. Not once did someone slide off their chair or bump into their neighbor. While many of us love getting lost in a long novel, teaching 5th graders requires a diverse toolkit of shorter, high-interest informational texts. These magazines allow me to teach critical literacy skills like analyzing text features, identifying author's purpose, and synthesizing information from charts and graphs. Because the articles are current and relatable, the students aren't just learning to read; they are learning to think critically about the world around them.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a dynamic and social experience. When we open a new issue, the room buzzes with \"Did you know?\" and \"Look at this!\" We often use these texts for close reading workshops, where students highlight evidence to support their arguments or participate in spirited Socratic seminars. It has moved us away from stagnant worksheets and toward authentic, real-world journalism that mimics how adults consume information.\r\n\r\nI have been especially moved by how these magazines have empowered my reluctant readers. For some students, a 300-page chapter book can feel like an impossible mountain to climb, but a vibrant, four-page feature on space exploration or deep-sea creatures feels achievable and exciting.
