The Legos were a great incentive for students trying to accomplish hard goals. They were very motivated to work hard and earn these rewards. A small gesture of hot cocoa and a snack brings so much joy to the students. The smallest of things that many of us enjoy everyday others sometimes don't get to enjoy unless they are offered these things in the classroom. For our Christmas celebration in December we offered the students a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows if they wanted them. Students we grateful and excited. They had many snacks brought in for the day, so we offered the cookies another day for a small snack. Before I could even get a picture they had devoured the snack. My students have enjoyed the creative supplies, the fidgets, the room decor, and the snacks to enjoy. \r\n\r\nThe students opened up the the paper, and the pipe cleaners immediately, as my students are very creative and like to use their hands. They made colorful flowers with the pipe cleaners to help decorate the Counseling Room, and were able to take some home. We made journals with the paper, as they are encouraged to write or draw about their feelings and experiences. \r\n\r\nMy students loved playing with the new fidgets, as using fidgets come with being in the Counseling Room, and it provides a way to occupy their hands as they speak. We have fidgets around the room, and we have a prize box. The sweet tart ropes, sour patch kids, toothpicks and pipe cleaners were used to make a model for a short section of DNA—enough to get a sense of what DNA is like and how it encodes life. Students were struggling at first with just their paper work. When I brought out the candy, the room lite up. Students were interested and ready to dive in deeper.
