We have had a great start to our year in 2nd grade! They work hard to get a \"happy ticket\" that goes towards their table group's points for the week. The best part of this project (the kids think) is the spinning wheel. The group that has the most points by the end of the week gets to spin the wheel to find out their reward! Their favorite spin is... bubble gum! Another donation we are loving is the log carpets. They have been a great addition for flexible seating when on the ground, and they allow students to have their own personal space! My favorite (I love organization) is the hair ties that I have used to mark each child's ChromeBook charger. With these paintings we had great conversation about the Applefest and why it is important to our school's town. The students loved the activity and are excited to hang up there canvas. The Dum Dum lollipops are always a big hit and the students love to have them especially on a fun Friday. The finger fidgets were welcomed by a couple of students who need a little something during down time in learning. I've never had the opportunity to hatch eggs before so I was learning right along with my kids. We had a wonderful parent volunteer donate the fertilized eggs and lend us her incubator. She came into our classroom and explained the process to the kids. Then, day by day we watched a video about what was happening inside the eggs. The kids had chick journals and they drew a picture and wrote about the chicks' development that day.\r\n\r\nAfter 21 days, we ended up with 9 adorable chicks. We were so blessed to be able to witness a couple of the eggs hatching in class. In my 18 years of teaching, I don't think I've ever seen excitement like that! \r\n\r\nThe brooder box and supplies were perfect for caring for the chicks in our classroom. It was a treat for us to be able to watch them grow through the glass. The kids enjoyed the responsibility of taking care of the chicks each day. They help refill the food, water, and handled them regularly. After a couple of weeks, I brought the chicks home. We ended up buying a chicken coop and built a run for them to get lots of outside time. \r\n\r\nNext spring, I plan to use the brooder box again when we hatch eggs! This project brought such joy to our classroom.
