Having dedicated binders allows them to keep these materials together, stay organized, and easily return to previous lessons when they need additional support.\r\n\r\nOne of the most valuable ways we are using these resources is during our writing assignments. Students can organize their brainstorming, outlines, rough drafts, and feedback in one place, allowing them to see how their writing develops from an initial idea into a finished piece. We are also using these organizational systems to support our literature units, giving students a place to keep reading notes, vocabulary, and analysis activities. These materials are helping us establish consistent classroom routines while teaching students that organization is an important part of academic success, not simply another task to complete.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, students will build on these routines by taking greater responsibility for managing their materials, tracking their progress, and preparing for increasingly challenging assignments. My students had a blast using the blacklights and highlighters to annotate poetry. The notebook journals allowed them to start drafting some of their poems for a portfolio project. \r\n\r\nWe used the blacklights and highlighters to analyze for different forms of figurative language within a series of poems. Each highlighter color was a different figurative language form, and by the time we finished reading all the poems, the students had a bright and colorful array of figurative language examples they could use. \r\n\r\nThe journals were then used to start drafting poems of different kinds, such as acrostic, sonnets, and several couplets.
