My Students

Do you know how cooks say their secret ingredient is love? Well my secret ingredient as a teacher is glitter. Glitter makes all projects look better, and the kids trip over themselves to finish their work so they can add glitter to it.

I teach 6th grade English Language Arts to a great group of ethnically diverse, economically disadvantaged kids in NYC.

They are a very mixed bunch of kids. Some are English language learners, some read on a 3rd grade level, and some are reading on a 10th grade level. As you can imagine, getting everyone to complete assignments is quite a task.

My Project

These materials, especially the glitter, will help make my job easier. Having projects for the kids to complete gets them involved in the lesson and makes them want to do the work. The glitter glue and poster boards will be used to make educational posters about chimpanzees at the end of our non-fiction unit. The highlighters will be used during grammar practice to diagram sentences (yes that still works as the best way to teach kids how to write a proper sentence). They are also helpful during test prep to highlight key ideas in questions and passages. Scissors are always handy during projects, and a few left handed ones means all of my kids can cut with ease.

These may seem like little things, but they make a HUGE difference is enticing kids to finish work.
