My Students

If you have the right answer the question is very easy. One of the hardest questions for an English teacher is how to get the kids to like reading. The answer is get the books they want.

I teach 6th grade Language Arts to a great group of ethnically diverse, economically disadvantaged kids in NYC.

Some struggle, some excel, but most of them read independently. I have a great library; filled with books that the kids request. Every year I ask my new homeroom what books they want in our library and the list goes on donorschoose. I'm glad to say my kids borrow 2-3 books a month for their own personal reading.

My Project

These books were requested by the kids in my class. They all wanted scary books and Goosebumps and Lois Duncan topped the list. Some of the girls also asked for the Dork Diaries. Having independent reading books will build my students' fluency and vocabulary. They skills they use to read these books; predicting, inferencing, using context clues can all be translated to the big test in the Spring.

It's a beautiful thing to see kids argue over who gets to go the bookshelves first. It's a priceless gift that will last with them all of their lives.
