My Students

All you need is the right books to get kids into reading. it sounds too good to be true, but I've seen it work in my classroom 2 years in a row.

I teach 6th grade English Language Arts to a great group of ethnically diverse, economically disadvantaged kids in NYC.

Some struggle, some excel, but my kids read. Well, most of them anyway. Instead of using the books the school gave me for my library, I asked the kids what they wanted to read and a beautiful friendship began. My kids read an average of 2-3 books a month, and that's pretty good for a middle school kid.

My Project

These books were chosen by students in my class. One boy asked for lots of animal books, many of the boys enjoy Dragon Ball Z, and some of the kids wanted the classic Harry Potter. When the kids read these books independently, they are building fluency and comprehension. The skills they use to finish the books; inferencing, context clues, drawing conclusions, predicting can all be used on their big test in the spring.
