I am currently a 5th grade teacher and thanks to your donation I was able to continue to build upon a classroom that provides students with a safe and engaging environment. A classroom that believes that all minds need to be nourished because as lifelong learners our minds are always under construction, especially a bilingual mind. \r\n \r\nTo culminate the year we were able to share treats and gather together at our new kidney table. Although, it's a place to conduct small group instruction it also serves as a spot to celebrate. Students truly enjoy this spot because it is a place to step away from their usual assigned seats and be able to concentrate. It also serves as a space for students to receive and navigate emotional, mental abilities to build resiliency skills. \r\n \r\nOther materials that are vital in our classroom were the curtains. The curtains blocked materials from students so that they are able to engage and focus on their work and lessons. It also enhanced our classroom to be visually appealing and welcoming. As well as provides both teacher and students easy access to retrieve materials. \r\n \r\nFinally, providing students with other materials for independent and/or group work such as dry erase markers and boards were truly handy in the classroom. Markers are consumables that we use a lot of and are engaging for students. In a world full of technology it is nice to provide students with the ability to access and develop motor skills. It is also direct access to their own creativity. \r\n \r\nI have pictures of students constructing their minds while utilizing our cherished materials. The students loved the brand new paint brushes, and the smocks worked so well to help protect their clothing so they could enjoy the sensory experience of painting. We are so happy to have big, thick paper to paint on--it makes for a great canvas with lots of room for kids to explore and be creative. And I cannot tell you how excited the kids are that we now have every color of the rainbow in stock.\r\n\r\nWe were so excited to use the pain daubers to practice stamping different fruits on trees when were learning about apples and fruit vocabulary! They were great for practicing our shape of the week--circle--and labeling different and requesting different colors. My students have really been enjoying exploring all the different materials. The biggest hit this fall has been the dough rollers and tactile stones--the kids love using them to make faces in our sensory sand trays, and it has been a really fun and engaging way to work on naming body parts and talking about different feelings and emotions. I'm so excited to break out the dough stampers next week to extend their learning and engagement and do a similar center with play doh! We have also enjoyed some fun gross motor play using the beanbags to practice naming our feelings, which have cute little faces with different emotions. \r\n\r\nThe textured sensory toys and weighted plush toys have been great supports for students to stay in their space and remain engaged during large group lessons. And the sensory bottles have been a great addition to our classroom calm down space--the kids love to watch the material move and the little faces on them is another way we can reinforce emotion related vocabulary. We used some of their finished creations to decorate our Art Hall, contributing to the beautification of our school and helping create an environment that celebrates art, creativity, and inclusion.\r\n\r\nI love providing my students with meaningful connections between Visual Arts, science, technology, engineering, and real-world problem-solving. We had a lot of fun getting outside and using them this spring. The students loved using the sand trays to practice drawing shapes and letters. They practiced making requests, labeling colors, and gross motor skills using the swing and catch cups during recess. And we had so much fun looking for colors on the playground using the color viewers on an outdoor nature walk. Another day we went for a walk outside and caught bugs using the little bug viewing cups! And the day we used the bubble wands we got so many great opportunities for kids to initiate communication and engage with each other!\r\n\r\nThe clipboards were great for holding papers for our scavenger hunts. The students love to walk around and search for different items to mark off--it is a popular activity that we repeat for lots of different language themes (like bugs, animals, and different color cars in the neighborhood.) And the shape bubbles and alphabet shells have been such a fun addition to both indoor and outdoor sensory bin play. This project gave us such a fun variety of materials that can be used in so many ways--my students will be enjoying them for years to come, and we are so grateful! The first thing that I used with my students right away was the \"stained glass\" art project that goes with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We first read the story, then practicing sequencing days of the week and the order of events for the story. Then, the students were so excited to get to pick their own food from the story to decorate and take home with them. One of my students absolutely crushed their project of the strawberry! (See picture).\r\n\r\nAnother amazing item that was donated that has had an instant impact is the red wiggle seat cushions. Many of my students need to move around and need sensory input to assist them in regulation. When I offered one of my students the seat cushion, he got the biggest smile on his face!
