My students are English language learners. Their families descend mainly from Mexico and Puerto Rico. These children are in a bilingual program where they are learning in English and Spanish. My students are in 1st through 3rd grades. The 1st graders learn in Spanish with their classroom teachers all year. The 2nd graders make the transition to English during 2nd semester (mainly at the start of.) The 3rd graders alternate English and Spanish every other week. The school also has a monolingual program, so the kids are exposed to children of many backgrounds. They are amazing kids and come from nice, respectful homes. Their intelligence and sweetness inspire me everyday! However, many of these kids live in poverty. They are provided with free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Our school also qualified for a grant to receive a healthy afternoon snack of some type of vegetable or fruit.
