They helped my students stay focused, energized, and ready to learn throughout our busy kindergarten day. The first part of this donation included writing journals that students used as part of our Early Finishers procedure. In other words, when Brownvillians finished their work before time was up, they could finish unfinished work, read a book, or use their journals. It was beautiful to see how many of them became invested in their own creations. Some wrote multi-chapter stories, while others chose to simply record their thoughts. Afterward, they could choose to share their writings with me and to get feedback.\r\n\r\nThe second part of this project included writing pads. We used these as an alternative to white boards which take more time to get out and clean up. Since we had the pads, students could simply gather their one material and get right to work. I so appreciated being able to give students' mathematical problems and have them solve it on their own boards. In this way, I could evaluate their work habits and, at times, mistakes and offer targeted feedback. Both aspects of this donation helped my students grow in expressing themselves. Without snack, most students would not have eaten anything until after 1pm, having eaten breakfast around 5 hours prior. As we know, learning becomes extremely difficult when one's belly is aching. Therefore, my teaching team and I decided to include a quick morning snack break in our daily schedules. These small moments to refuel and refresh became vital to the health of our class, in the end. Furthermore, due to the help of this project, I was able to provide such a moment to my Brownvillians. Each day, they had the opportunity to either eat one of the snacks provided from class or to bring one from home. I am so grateful to those who partnered with me in this endeavor!\r\n\r\nConcerning their reactions, the students' gasps and whispers of elation could be heard when I broke out a new snack item from our project! Additionally, having a variety of options encouraged them to transition into snack time– which usually included cleaning up the previous activity and appropriately waiting to be called by the snack helper– more quickly because they wanted to ensure they got the \"best pick of the crop.\" Such enthusiasm also helped our class flow more efficiently. In school, the less time one spends transitioning, the more time he or she has to dedicate to a given activity. Thank you for your continued support!
