This project would not have been possible without your kindness and support. As a first-year kindergarten teacher, I realized how crucial it is for young readers to be exposed to decodable books and to start learning how to read with these beginner-level texts. These decodable books not only teach students how to sound out and read words, but they also teach them many other valuable skills, such as learning how to identify the front and back covers, learning the direction to read print, using illustrations to build meaning from the text, and starting to notice various punctuation marks. I have observed my students sounding out words by using their knowledge of letter-sound identification and blending these letter sounds together to read CVC and CCVC words. Additionally, these decodable texts expose students to high-frequency words, such as \"the\" and \"I,\" that they will use often in their reading and writing. \r\n\r\nThere is a strong emphasis on reading in my classroom, where I spend a lot of time helping my students build their reading stamina. I begin by teaching my students about the joy that reading brings us and how reading empowers us to learn new concepts. The end goal is for my students to be able to read independently for 20 minutes every day, and then to read with a partner and share new ideas or words they learned to decode. Attaining this goal would not have been possible without the wonderful decodable books that your donations provided because these books are developmentally appropriate, engaging, have larger text for students to focus on, and have bright illustrations that correspond with the text. I have seen my students' excitement around reading grow significantly since the first day they were immersed into reading these decodable books. Students who struggled to read became more confident in themselves and their decoding skills as they developed the courage to sound out words and identify high-frequency words they had previously learned. \r\n\r\nMy students who began as shy readers or who were not confident in their reading abilities are especially enjoying these decodable books because these books have just the right amount of words on each page and illustrations to match to help students make sense of the text. These particular students, who were not the strongest readers, have improved significantly in their reading skills and have been reading CVC and CCVC words more fluently and with expression, compared to reading letter-by-letter and word-by-word when they first started reading before we received these decodable books. Students who are average readers have been enjoying these books and have been excited to find new books that meet their reading level and push them to read at a slightly higher level than their current level by introducing new high-frequency words that have not yet been taught and introducing longer words with blends and digraphs. My students who are high readers have also found several engaging books that match their current level and encourage them to continue increasing their reading skills by building fluency and comprehension skills. My students and I cannot thank you enough for your generosity and kindness in making it possible for us to have a classroom library with books that they can read to support their reading journeys. My students were thrilled to see their new seating options. I have found that students are more alert and on-task when they can choose their own spot. It also gives them a sense of responsibility. We talked about choosing a spot that is a good fit. They are also able to collaborate with others more easily than they would if they were in traditional rows with desks. As we all know, kindergrateners can be busy-bodies, so these flexible seating options definitely help their success in the classroom.\r\n\r\nMy next step is to try and get even more flexible seating so every student has the opportunity and choice to use some type of seat other than the traditional chair. The wiggle bands on the chairs have been impactful for the kids. They like that they can move their feet while they are working and it is a way for the to add movement without adding distraction to others. The new chairs have been a great addition to our classroom as they allow the kids to make a daily choice about the type of seat that will be best for them. \r\n\r\nWhen I had the new seats, wiggle bands and seat sacks in our room the kids were excited and wanted to try them out! We talked about how to use the materials so that we could be successful and they could see the benefits to the additions to our classroom. They like to be able to tell others coming into our classroom about our new items and how they use them! The options have allowed them to lead how and where they will learn and work in the classroom. \r\n\r\nI am always proud when my students take ownership of what we have in our classroom and how we can work as a collaborative team. These new materials have allowed my students to continue to make choices that are best of them while also sharing the use of our new items.
