This project helped breathe new life into the classroom and into our learning rotations. I realized over the first half of the year that our rotations needed more life skills groups that students can actually benefit from and use in their everyday life. I also had many new students join my room that needed more sensory options than what I had. The blankets and pillows are a calm corner favorite and has really helped soothe many students when they are feeling a sensory overload. The light toys, busy boards, and other cause and effect toys have been great additions to stimulate interest and grow connections about how cause and effect work. Both my class and another of the 4th grade classes completed this project right before winter break. My students were so thrilled, excited and engaged by both the building of the rovers and all of the pre-work that went into them. In budgeting for their project they had to use multiplication, addition and subtraction, which are all 4th grade standards we had been working on. My 4th graders love asking if they will ever actually need what they are learning, so it was so nice for them to see how those skills can be concretely applied in life. I have never seen every single student in my class that engaged in their math! Additionally, it tied in perfectly with what we were doing in our science unit: learning about systems, parts and functions. \r\n\r\nActually making the rovers was fantastic too! They were so excited. The other 4th grade teacher told me her students kept asking her if they really got to make these because they couldn't quite believe it. They did such a good job thinking through what they wanted to include on their rovers and how to build them. Additionally, they showed such great perseverance starting again or trying something new if what they wanted to do did not work. Both classes had a fantastic time creating these from start to finish (including eating them at home afterwards). I had two students mention this project just recently. One student asked when we could do a creative STEM project like the rovers again. The other student let me know that she was so proud of what she made that she never ate her rover and she still has it in her home.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity and allowing me to provide this opportunity for the 4th graders at my school.
