The new art supplies—markers, oil pastels, tempera paint, stamps, and more—have brought a creative spark to our math lessons. Students use these materials as motivation to complete their math work and as a reward for their hard work. They've also used them to create colorful displays that showcase their math learning for the entire school to see.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was undeniable! The vibrant colors and new tools inspired them to finish their math problems so they could decorate their worksheets or design displays. It's amazing to see how creativity has boosted their enthusiasm for math.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to send these supplies home so students can work with their families to create math posters showing how they use math in everyday life. Once the posters return, we'll use them to create word problems together in class—connecting math to real-world experiences in a fun and meaningful way.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this possible! I meet with a group of students every day for 30 minutes to work on phonics. 5th graders can often be reluctant with phonics because they feel that it is too \"babyish,\" despite needing the skills. Also, since I only meet with some of these students 30 minutes a day, I am not able to rely on other incentive structures to motivate them.\r\n\r\nI have created a system in which students earn stars for positive learning behaviors. By filling in the star chart, they can earn their prizes at the end. The star chart has been very motivating for my students and has been integral in reinforcing behaviors that enhance their learning. For example, some kids will want to sound out the words earlier than everyone else, but that gives the answer away and doesn't allow all students to practice decoding. When they wait for my signal to read the word, they earn stars because they were able to practice.\r\n\r\nThanks for allowing my students to invest in their own learning!","fullyFundedDate":1758920964404,"projectUrl":"project/prizes-for-struggling-readers/9755111/","projectTitle":"Prizes for Struggling Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Woodbridge","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6647010_orig.jpg?crop=1176,1176,x0,y196&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565728368160","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6647010"},{"teacherId":6647010,"projectId":9278216,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students have a fresh new rug to sit on for their whole group lessons! 5th graders are already reluctant to come to the carpet for lessons, and it doesn't help when the carpet is old and dirty. Graphic novels have been a great way to get students to read books, but graphic novels often do the job of \"visualizing\" for the reader and do not give students adequate practice in reading descriptive language.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, reading \"One Crazy Summer\" was their first exposure to reading a longer chapter book. As we read the book aloud as a class, students became invested in the characters and their stories. It was much easier to get students to read the sequels to the book once they were already invested.\r\n\r\nThanks to your donations, I had previously reluctant readers giddy to pick up the new chapter books. Each time the students are so excited to be able to be creative, work together and have fun doing so. \r\n\r\nAt our school, we talk a lot about showing kindness and practicing perseverance. These projects are perfect for that. The students do an awesome being respectful and kind to their partners and teammates. They also get to practice perseverance through a productive struggle, but in a way that is very low stakes. When something doesn't work, instead of giving up and quitting, they try something else to see if that works. They look around the classroom to see what other students are doing and try that. I have also seen them encouraging each other to keep going and not give up. They do get competitive, but in a friendly way and they cheer each other on when they do well. Some students even like to have a whiteboard on the carpet with them during whole group time to take \"notes\" of the lesson. \r\nThe headphones have also been super useful for students when we are doing whole school activities like fire drills, assemblies, and field trips.
