Having the books in their hands every day has allowed us to slow down, dig into the text together, and wrestle with big ideas about power, truth, and individuality. Students have been asking thoughtful questions and making connections that wouldn't be possible without consistent access to the novel. Later this semester, we'll use the class sets of Interpreter of Maladies to explore short fiction, voice, and cultural identity, giving students a chance to encounter a wide range of perspectives. Your support helps make rich, meaningful literary conversations a regular part of our classroom, and my students and I are truly grateful.\r\n\r\nThese texts help students practice close reading, discussion, and critical thinking in a meaningful way. With 1984, students are learning how to track complex ideas across a longer text, analyze symbolism, and question the reliability of information and authority. They're also practicing how to support their interpretations with evidence from the text. Interpreter of Maladies will help students shift to short fiction, focusing on character, perspective, and theme, while also building empathy and cultural awareness through a variety of voices and experiences.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who don't usually see themselves as \"strong readers\" have really surprised themselves with 1984. The ideas spark curiosity, and students who are often quiet have been willing to speak up when they notice something interesting or troubling in the text. Others enjoy debating the novel's themes and making connections to the world around them. I'm looking forward to seeing how a different group of students connects with Interpreter of Maladies later in the semester, especially those who enjoy short stories and character-driven writing.","fullyFundedDate":1761967402949,"projectUrl":"project/class-book-sets/9854778/","projectTitle":"Class Book Sets","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Dudek","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9405484_orig.jpg?crop=2607,2607,x107,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1762267501493","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9405484"},{"teacherId":9405484,"projectId":9912923,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our guitar club now has essential supplies that keep our instruments playable and protected. We are using the new strings and picks during weekly rehearsals and skill-building workshops focused on tone, strumming accuracy, and fingerstyle technique. One especially meaningful moment came when students learned how to change their own strings for the first time. Many students have been paying professionals to change their strings for them and now we are able to do it in-house!\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials, they were excited and honestly relieved. Many of them had been playing on worn-out strings or borrowing picks, so having fresh supplies made them feel like their music mattered. The guitar cases were met with equal appreciation because they give students a safe way to store and transport shared instruments without fear of damage. \r\n\r\nNext, students are preparing for a small ensemble performance project where they will collaborate with our school's choir class. One especially meaningful moment came when a new club member, who did not have access to an instrument, was able to join our session and learn a new song for the first time using the loaner guitar. By the end of the meeting, they successfully played their first song alongside their peers, which boosted both their confidence and sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new guitar, their reaction was immediate excitement and gratitude. They understood that this instrument represented opportunity not just for one student, but for anyone who might need it. Several students volunteered to help care for it, tune it, and make sure it's ready for the next person who needs it, which has created a strong sense of shared responsibility within the club.\r\n\r\nNext, students are working on a group performance project where they will collaborate with the choir class within our school. The loaner guitar will continue to play a key role by allowing every student to participate in rehearsals and performances, even if they don't yet have access to an instrument outside of school.
