This novel introduces students to essential skills such as close reading, character analysis, and theme development, while also encouraging them to examine complex ideas like loyalty, identity, and the difficult line between right and wrong. Having a full class set allows every student to follow along, reference key passages, and participate fully in discussions without barriers.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is active and collaborative. Students read independently, in pairs, and aloud as a class, and the conversations that follow have been some of the most thoughtful I've seen all year. The tension between friendship and morality in the story sparks deep discussion, especially among seniors who are navigating their own transitions into adulthood. Students frequently return to important scenes during class conversations to support their thinking, which has strengthened both their comprehension and confidence.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially engaged with this novel. They are eager to participate in discussions, make connections to their own lives, and explore the characters' choices in meaningful ways. Your support didn't just provide books; it created access, equity, and a shared literary experience that has strengthened our classroom community. Thank you for helping make powerful conversations and learning possible for my students.","fullyFundedDate":1760369820992,"projectUrl":"project/help-bring-literature-to-life-for-my-col/9661315/","projectTitle":"Help Bring Literature to Life for My Collaborative Seniors!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Seward","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1712813_orig.jpg?crop=180,180,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1760527970436","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1712813"},{"teacherId":3683581,"projectId":9626421,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students now have access to books that truly reflect who they are and the conversations they're eager to have. These new titles have already strengthened our Jag Book Club meetings in the library. The Words We Keep has opened up thoughtful discussions around mental health, while Fat Chance, Charlie Vega encourages conversations about body positivity, identity, and belonging. All Systems Red adds an exciting sci-fi option for students who love action and worldbuilding, and Blackwater has been especially appealing to readers who gravitate toward atmospheric graphic novels.\r\n\r\nReading in our library is a communal, active experience. Students read side by side, annotating, sharing ideas, and asking questions during meetings. Having multiple copies of each book allows everyone to participate together, which helps students build confidence in their reading skills, explore new genres, and connect themes across different kinds of stories. These shared texts create a sense of community among readers who might not meet each other otherwise.\r\n\r\nI'm incredibly grateful for your support in bringing these books to our shelves. Your contribution has made our book club more inclusive and engaging, and it's given students stories that feel relevant, affirming, and exciting to talk about. It is always so fun for me to watch my students start a new story; this particular piece has so many surprises, and they love reading dystopian novels. \r\n\r\nThe reading brought up many discussions about good v evil, maintaining tradition while embracing innovation, family dynamics, and friendship. We mostly read as a whole group so that we can stop and discuss as we learn new things. I also used the novel to introduce reading skills such as annotating and identifying theme and imagery. With Trust the Grind in their hands, players are learning to connect the discipline and perseverance they show on the field to their personal goals as students and leaders. The book's short, direct chapters make it approachable, while the stories from professional athletes spark authentic conversations about grit, teamwork, and resilience.\r\n\r\nReading in this setting looks different than a typical classroom: instead of worksheets or tests, our athletes gather in small groups to read, pause, and talk together about what they've learned. It's interactive, reflective, and tied directly to their experiences as teammates. Skills like identifying themes, making text-to-self connections, and discussing character development become concrete when framed through the lens of leadership and sports.\r\n\r\nA few students who were hesitant readers at the start have been the most excited to jump in — sharing how they're applying lessons about consistency and accountability to practices and even their family responsibilities. One player proudly told the group that he wrote down a weekly goal after reading a chapter and actually followed through for the first time. Moments like that show us that the lessons from this book go far beyond reading comprehension.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our athletes are not just reading a book — they're developing a new way of seeing themselves as leaders, readers, and role models.","fullyFundedDate":1746787379912,"projectUrl":"project/librarian-in-the-huddle/9292377/","projectTitle":"Librarian in the Huddle","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. DeMarco","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3683581_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1469533625178","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-demarco"},{"teacherId":7880953,"projectId":8821779,"letterContent":"Having copies of The Poet X made such a huge difference in my classroom. I have one student from Brazil who came to me and said, \"I see myself in the book. Thank you for reading it with me.\"\r\n\r\nThese students have to master a reading test at the end of the year; it doesn't matter what their native language is - they still have to pass the test for graduation. Being able to have access to stories that are interesting and relatable helps the students become confident and successful with their reading skills.\r\n\r\nWe mostly read this book as a whole group and stopped here and there to discuss. Several students read ahead and finished early, and sometimes I required independent reading. \r\n\r\nAll in all, this has been one of the most successful units I have taught to date.
