My students are predominantly white, but there is a strong Asian-American and African-American presence as well. Many of the students are kind and thoughtful, but they need to be challenged academically and expand their world views. Many of my students struggle to see the value in class beyond a grade. It's my primary objective to have them realize their potential and invest in their minds. I have a saying in the classroom that I wish the school would adapt -- "Embrace Your Inner Nerd" -- and class by class, year by year, I reinforce this message with students. By the end of the year, the students that have put the work and effort in have grown tremendously. They recognize that by conditioning themselves academically, their options widen.
