We averaged reading 60-70 pages a week (between each meeting), and came in ready to talk about what we read - from opinions on the characters and plot to discussing predictions of what was coming next. Both novels also led to really great conversations about mental health and other issues that young adults often deal with. Because groups were small, students were vulnerable and really did a great job talking about their feelings and how they can relate to characters. They also were able to think deeply about the reading and learned to debate and have academic conversations. Students were very excited to meet each week and were very vocal about how much they liked the novels.\r\n\r\n\r\nAfter we finished the book club and group discussions we moved into the project. Students were able to be creative and think outside the box by creating scrapbook pages from the perspective of different characters in the story and/or different themes in the story. We all had a blast throughout the book club and project. We would not have been able to do this without your support. There is nothing like holding a new book in your hands, and the students were thrilled with the materials. The books arrived in time for the start of our civil rights unit. It was exciting to see the children so engaged reading the texts about this topic. Many of the books are by fantastic illustrators, and the students enjoyed analyzing the symbolic use of color and lines. For example, some of the students noticed the wide black brush strokes on some pages of the book \"Boycott Blues\" that contrasted with the bright colorful backgrounds on other pages. Another book students gravitated towards was \"Coretta.\" While most students were familiar with Dr. Martin Luther King, few had learned about his wife. Students thoroughly enjoyed reading her biography. Thank you again for your support of this project.
