In my Art classes I use books as an introduction to a new lesson. The books are about a famous artist that I want them to learn about or about an art tool or medium they are going to use. Starting a lesson with a book helps students make connections. Students are inspired by what they hear and what they see in the illustrations that go along with the story. Students make connections to the artists they are learning about and the artwork they are creating through books. Starting a new lesson with a book allows my students to retain information that connects to the artwork that they are about to create. It brings me joy to have my students to ask to read the book again at the end of class or the next class because they enjoyed it so much the first time.
