Students were able to read these books independently and discuss them in small groups during the first quarter. While reading, students were able to focus on some of the standards we worked on in the first few units, such as character, setting, and structure. Not only did this help students solidify the standards for the first few units, but they also helped students discuss longer works that they could use as their mentor text for FRQ3 on the AP Exam.\r\n\r\nStudent favorites were Project Hail Mary, Where the Crawdads Sing, Remarkably Bright Creatures, and Circe. Students really appreciated having the option to read more contemporary literature that is just as thought provoking as works deemed as \"classics.\"\r\n\r\nThank you again for your continued support. Literature circles and Socratic seminars are filled with excitement and thoughtful debate, and students are beginning to see how their own journeys connect to the characters they're reading about.\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just provide books — it created space for my students to feel seen, heard, and valued. With the books you helped provide, our classroom became a place of curiosity, debate, and discovery.\r\n\r\nStudents read both fiction and nonfiction texts that challenged them to think critically about morality, identity, and transformation. They wrestled with difficult questions: How much of who we are is shaped by our environment? What role does choice play in becoming a \"monster\" or a hero? By analyzing these ideas, they strengthened their reading comprehension, sharpened their analytical writing, and—most importantly—developed empathy as they considered the struggles and motivations of others.\r\n\r\nYour support made it possible for my students to access engaging, high-quality literature that pushed them to think beyond the page and connect themes to the real world. Many students shared that this was one of the most memorable units of the year, because it allowed them to see stories, and themselves, in new ways.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in the power of books to transform minds and hearts. The books you provided were some anchor texts that students were able to use to help them answer this question.\r\n\r\nWe read A Monster Calls together as a class, and students thoroughly enjoyed this heart-wrenching novel. On the end of the year survey, many students said this was their favorite thing they read all year! Conor's experiences were something that helped students build empathy and understanding for others' struggles.\r\n\r\nThe independent novels in this project were also read by students, and I plan to use them even more with additional units next year.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your support!","fullyFundedDate":1742909376103,"projectUrl":"project/using-literature-to-help-answer-essentia/9148247/","projectTitle":"Using Literature to Help Answer Essential Questions!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Howell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6624570_orig.jpg?crop=1662,1662,x0,y210&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565491183849","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6624570"},{"teacherId":6397233,"projectId":9096187,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, my students have been able to access a powerful collection of books that are reshaping the way they read, think, and connect with literature. With titles like Scythe, All My Rage, The Glass Castle, The Namesake, We Are Not From Here, The Martian, A Wrinkle in Time, and Divergent, students are exploring complex themes such as morality, resilience, identity, immigration, science, and belonging. These texts have opened the door to lessons on literary analysis, narrative voice, symbolism, and character development—and they've sparked conversations that extend far beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nReading now looks like quiet focus, rich group discussions, and genuine excitement. One student who was previously disengaged became completely captivated by Scythe and has since asked for more dystopian novels. Another student, who rarely participated, bravely shared a personal story after reading All My Rage, finding connection and courage through the characters' experiences. Several of my multilingual learners were deeply moved by We Are Not From Here and The Namesake, finally seeing reflections of their own journeys in literature.
