The TI30 XS is my favorite and preferred calculator for use in the classroom, and now we have enough for every student. These materials, which included: cutting mats, magnetic tiles, and lego sets, have allowed my students to construct and build small-scale homes and buildings. These structures that were built were then used in multiple lessons about measurement, area, perimeter, ratios, and scale and proportions. \r\n \r\nWhen the students were able to build their own structures, they were able to get connected to the math in ways that don't happen with traditional worksheets. They had the opportunity to authentically connect math to architecture, building, and construction. The question: \"when will we use this in real life?\" was never asked during this unit. They were able to connect every step of their individual builds back to mathematical calculations. This shift has had a profound impact on their overall engagement in the class. I have seen students who typically struggle with traditional paper-pencil math practices engage with others and complete this project. \r\n \r\nThese resources have done far more than provide an activity; they have provided a purpose for mathematics. As we have used the items, it's been good to see how they have helped the students. For example, the whiteboards, pens, and erasers have been used at the beginning of class by my Biology students as we work on starters. These items make it easy for students to explain their thinking and easily edit their responses. Some students are also able to focus more if they are able to doodle, and the whiteboards make it easy for them to do this.\r\n\r\nThe Hope Squad students have used half of the clothespins in one of their activities. The students wrote inspirational messages on the pins then gave them out during our two lunch periods. Bingham students were eager to get the pins and then pass them on to others. We are going to do another clothespin campaign in January.
