My students are so excited and have been very motivated by the printer. I teach math and science to multiple classes of 5th graders in an elementary school so I have mostly been using it for math or science challenges. We use a program called TinkerCad to create our own 3D designs and get to apply principals of measurement, volume, coordinates, angles, shapes, and reflections in our designs. They also get to think about the most efficient way to make the shapes that they want (combine shapes, cut shapes, rotate them, group them, etc.) \r\n\r\nOne of the hardest concepts for them to understand in our math core is volume of compound figures. They were able to design a compound figure with a specific volume (they had to use algebra to determine which measurements would work) to earn a special 3D print of their choice. I have one student who was very motivated and has completed every challenge problem to earn free prints. He is designing his own Pokemon using geometric solids and is very proud of his work. \r\n\r\nIn science we are learning about how matter is made of particles. We modeled particles using playdough before using the software on our computers to help us see how to combine shapes and particles to form larger solids. We were then able to use the duplicate button in the software to design models of matter with particles in solid, liquid, or gas arrangements (tight or loose). When they complete the design challenge we can either print their project or print their own fun designs. The 3D printer is a wonderful way for the students to be more engaged and excited about modeling with math and science. It also serves as a great motivator for the students to finish their work so that they have time to work on challenge problems and extensions.","fullyFundedDate":1757683150093,"projectUrl":"project/stem-in-action-3d-printing-for-5th-grad/9684757/","projectTitle":"Stem in Action: 3d Printing for 5th Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Diaz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1575426_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1457579805465","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1575426"},{"teacherId":7621171,"projectId":9419882,"letterContent":"I want to deeply express my gratitude for your generous donation of the LEGO SPIKE robot for our classroom. From the moment the students saw the robot, their eyes lit up with excitement and curiosity. They immediately began enthusiastically exploring, building, and programming, turning each session into an active and meaningful learning opportunity. Thanks to this resource, we have been able to initiate a robotics project where students design and program their own robots to solve real-world challenges, developing critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. This robot has not only transformed the way we teach technology and science, but has also inspired many of our students to consider careers in engineering and programming. When the students first walked in and saw the materials, their faces lit up with excitement. They immediately began organizing their books and notebooks, and you could hear them saying things like, \"Now everything is clean!\" This sense of order has already transformed the way we work with our daily routines each day.\r\n\r\nParents and students came together to set up the organizers, making it a true community effort. Because of your generosity, our classroom is now a safer, more structured, and welcoming space. The students are not only proud of how neat and organized our shelves look, but they are also more motivated.\r\n\r\n One of our favorite moments so far was watching students take ownership of their notebooks. This project has done more than give us materials—it has inspired my students to take responsibility for their learning environment. The next step is using these organizers daily to support our Spanish and Science projects. As we continue to build reading stamina and confidence, your support ensures that every child feels prepared, valued, and excited to learn.
