During a recent activity, students used base-ten blocks to show how 47 can be \"traded\" into 4 tens and 7 ones. With your donations, I was able to purchase two light tables and a variety of literacy and math manipulatives for my students to use in our daily learning centers. Our Light Table center is definitely one of my student's favorites. They love it so much, I keep it active all year long. I always hear excited students when they know the light table center is a part of their center rotation. \r\n\r\nTo say these light tables have made a difference would be an understatement. Students are always engaged in our light table center. One light table is used to practice hands-on math and literacy skills such as sorting objects into groups by categories, counting by 1s and 10s, making patterns and shape designs, domino trains, practicing alphabet letter names and sounds, and building words. \r\n\r\nThe other light table is used to practice fine-motor skills by tracing alphabet letters, numbers, and drawings. Giving my student's choices as to how they want to use the light table is empowering. They love tracing a variety of drawings and because they love it, they practice it. I have never seen my student's handwriting be as good as it has been this year (I even had a sub tell me most of my Kindergartners have nicer handwriting than she does). I attribute my student's growth to their frequent use of the light tables and fine motor practice in tracing, drawing, and writing. With your donation, each student has access to their own headphones, which fosters independent work and improves concentration and learning outcomes. \r\n\r\nIn addition to daily math and reading lessons, we also use technology in our independent learning centers where students practice specific literacy and math skills, access online books for science and social studies curriculums, and listen to teacher-led assignments and assessments. I challenged them to try it with the larger spinner first, then move through the smaller ones that were more difficult. They had to adjust their track again to allow it to work.
