The students absolutely delighted in the unboxing and assembling of it all; the highlight was the discs that had to be blown up. To prepare for all the excitement, I included the new classroom additions on my classroom job list. Thus, the \"disc doctor\" got to work pumping up the discs, and the \"cushion commando\" made sure that every day the cushions were organized and ready for the next day. Our \"fidget phanatic\" (Philly fan, I had to) distributes and collects fidget toys (we have everything from pipe cleaners to old cars that the students roll up and down their arms).\r\n\r\nInitially, I was afraid that there would be a bit of chaos associated with all of the new \"fun,\" but my students rose to the occasion, now knowing exactly what they will choose to make sure they are comfy for the duration of the class. They are given two minutes to come in and get settled; for some this means getting a wobble disc to put under their feet (yes, I do allow shoes off so that they can feel the sensation more), and for others it means a massive stack of cushions to sit on. Either way, they come in daily knowing that this classroom has been set up for them; their individual needs and their comfort.\r\n\r\nThis idea was sparked last year when I was learning about my upcoming 8th graders and their current teachers kept saying things like, \"he is really smart but can't sit still.\" I couldn't have one cancel out the other. So, this idea was born. The one student in particular who had been given this label in XL now sits in class with his shoes off, quietly kicking the desk band, sometimes alternating to another band that he stretches with his hands. He is by far one of my most engaged, well-spoken students, and I give my \"fidget fun\" credit for this. \r\n\r\nI am truly honored that you gave my students this reset on their daily 90-minute ELA block. Although they may not love the curriculum, I can safely say that they love coming to class. That is because of you! It really did help uplift the classroom and cannot wait for the students this year to use those same tools to start their learning journey as they start kindergarten. We absolutely love our new rug, bean bag chairs and pillows. We finally have a space in our room to read comfortably or to take a brain break. \r\nThe weighted dinosaur has helped us through many tough issues, we love having him to hold or hug when needed. \r\nThe jellyfish and fish lava lamp is great to look at when we're feeling stressed or overwhelmed.
