They had very different opinions from each other and were really good at arguing their point of view. They were surprised with the fact that some states allow people to own exotic pets, and they discussed some of the dangers of this.\r\n\r\n Another article the students enjoyed was, \"Australia's Social Media Ban\". They were very against this idea. We tied it to the law that bans phones in our school.\r\n\r\n Once again, thank you for this wonderful resource! I have had a tremendous increase in the number of students who volunteer to read texts and articles aloud in class. Even some of my lowest readers have volunteered. Some days, I have to tell students they will have to wait until the next class to read because we had more students who wanted to read than reading parts. This novel has been at the center of our lessons for the past weeks and we are enjoying reading and working of our writing skills along side with it.\r\n\r\nAs you can see we are creating booklets relating to the elements of the story as we read it. The students are identifying elements of the plot such as setting, exposition, rising action, and so forth. They are also giving it an artistic touch by designing drawing and illustrations to each of the elements they write about. Students are enjoying and engaging with this project.\r\n\r\nAt the same time, we are using the novel as a guide for developing imaginative writing skills for a narrative of their own. Practicing this mode of writing can be a valuable skill as it may be one of writing modes they are tested on during OSA (state assessment). This is great practice to prepare them to be successful on that assessment. \r\n\r\nFurthermore, I appreciate the community at Donors Choose. It's a wonderful way to help make projects like this possible at a time when school budgets are being cut and limited funding is affecting our classrooms. The Graveyard Book's murder mystery and eerie tone have sustained students through its highly demanding language and complex characterization. It consistently pushes their vocabulary and comprehension. Students are learning to track how mood, setting, and character choices develop across the novel rather than relying on quick summaries or surface-level interpretations from 2-3 page excerpts of novels, which is what the standard curriculum provides them. The text expects effort, and students are meeting that expectation.\r\n\r\nMexikid has resonated with many students for a different reason. They recognize their own lives — and their parents' experiences — in the story. Family dynamics, cultural expectations, and generational differences feel familiar, which has led students to make text-to-self connections that they can anchor in their own experiences. Students who are often disengaged during reading are finishing chapters, revisiting scenes, and explaining moments in the book through their own experiences. \r\n\r\nInstead of giving rote responses to short excerpts for a grade or to check them off, students follow characters and ideas across hundreds of pages and over weeks of reading, often because they want to. They are practicing remembering details, noticing gradual changes in characters, and sustaining focus beyond a brief reading window.
