They recently used the Idiom cards to create illustrated idioms to hang in our Idiom Gallery. Idioms are a very tricky concept to learn for non-native speakers of English. The students have also enjoyed using Lakeshore's Reading and Writing Center Activities to help scaffold their English development learning. They couldn't contain their excitement as we unboxed the new building blocks and STEM sets, gasping as each new piece was revealed. They immediately started asking, \"Are these really for us?\" and \"When do we get to build?\" Having these hands-on materials in our classroom instantly shifted their energy, making them feel valued, curious, and incredibly eager to dive into engineering.\r\n\r\nWe have already put these non-consumable resources to work during our daily STEM challenge time. Recently, our class used the blocks to explore structural engineering by designing and testing earthquake-resistant towers. One unforgettable moment happened when two students, who typically struggle with quiet seatwork, spent 45 minutes collaborating to build a multi-tiered bridge. They tested its weight limit, redesigned the base after a collapse, and cheered when it finally held three heavy textbooks. These sets are allowing my students to move beyond worksheets and physically test, fail, adapt, and succeed.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these durable building tools will serve as the foundation for our upcoming physics and simple machines unit. Next week, the students will use the sets to construct functional levers and pulleys to solve a real-world problem: lifting heavy loads with minimal force.
