One of my favorite classroom moments has been watching students take a concept from a lesson and turn it into something visual and personal. The materials have given students another way to demonstrate understanding, especially for students who may not always feel confident expressing their learning through traditional written assignments.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were excited to see that they were going to have the opportunity to create, not just read and write. They immediately began talking about what they could make and how they could connect art to the literature. The classroom became more collaborative as students shared ideas, helped one another, and took pride in their finished work. These projects have helped students see that American literature is not just a collection of stories from the past—it is a reflection of people, cultures, experiences, and ideas that can still connect to their lives today.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using art as students move through additional periods and works of American literature. Students will create new projects that demonstrate their understanding of the time period, themes, and authors we study, while also making connections between literature, history, and their own experiences. I have seen students come into class tired or unfocused, have a quick snack, and return to their work more energized and ready to participate. What has meant the most to me is watching students realize that they do not have to feel embarrassed or explain why they need something to eat. They can simply take a snack and get back to being students. Having that support has helped create an environment where students feel cared for and know that their well-being matters.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our current English lessons, students will keep using the snack cabinet as needed while participating in reading, writing, discussions, and collaborative activities. They loved having so many choices and were eager to see how they could use the supplies to make their own creations. The response has been especially meaningful because students quickly understood that these materials were not about creating \"perfect\" art—they were about having a safe space to express themselves.
