The students in my classes are teenagers in their second year in U.S. schools who are learning to read and write in English. Their home languages are Spanish, Swahili, and Tigrinya. Because they have varied levels of literacy in English, many students benefit from the visual and tactile technique of running an index finger under the words as they read aloud, or as they listen to the sentences read aloud. \r\n\r\nOur school district anticipates more cuts in the coming academic year due to the current cuts in federal funding for public education.
