My classroom serves a diverse group of learners. Most of my freshmen English students qualify for free or reduced lunch and read below grade level. Many speak English as a second language They work tirelessly to build their literacy skills, write with purpose and realize the power of their own perspective. As Riverside's newspaper advisor, I also coach young journalists to learn and share our school and community's stories in their award-winning, bilingual publication, The Pirates' Hook. The newspaper program is entirely self-funded through advertising and sponsors. We publish six issues every year and deliver 2,000 printed copies to students, staff, parents and community members.
