The students in my classes are teenagers in their second year in U.S. schools who are learning to read and write in English. Their home languages are Spanish, Swahili, and Tigrinya. Because they have varied levels of literacy in English, many students benefit from the visual and tactile technique of running an index finger under the words as they read aloud, or as they listen to the sentences read aloud. \r\n\r\nOur school district anticipates more cuts in the coming academic year due to the current cuts in federal funding for public education. They will need to be computer literate for many types of jobs when they leave high school. I am teaching them to be independent learners, using their computers to complete work for many classes. Many will store their computers in my room, charging for a while, to be able to use later. \r\n\r\nBecause the learning levels are so varied in my classes, I need to have work prepared for all levels of reading, writing and abilities. This book is perfect for our higher level English language learners. Even though the classes are mixed in levels, I am able to teach the book through a combination of read aloud, focusing on specific passages, and independent reading. To introduce the book, I use videos, photos and observations charts to get students thinking about the setting and issues in the plot. In addition, I preteach vocabulary students will encounter in each chapter before reading it. \r\n\r\nWhile reading the book, I have students complete characterization charts to understand and delve deeper into the characters. I also focused on developing students' writing by having mini lessons on adjectives and having students write descriptive sentences about a scene or setting and adding more descriptive language to make writing more interesting. We also practiced writing summaries of chapters and the organization of a paragraph. \r\n\r\nIn the end, students completed a poster project online, highlighting one of the characters from the book. All of the students could participate in this and were very successful. Thank you again, for making all of this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1728002654152,"projectUrl":"project/books-needed-for-esl-english-2-class/8815677/","projectTitle":"Books Needed for ESL English 2 Class!!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Soules","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7071249"},{"teacherId":8420549,"projectId":8444567,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donation! You have allowed me to organize one of our longest running labs for my earth and environmental science class, and helped more students become involved with the class.\r\n\r\nWith these waders, buckets, and shovels my students set up their long running Winogradsky Columns. Using the waders, students collected mud and water samples from the Eno River that runs near our school to create mini ecosystems to keep in the classroom. Each partner group have four mini ecosystems, each testing a different variable against the control, such as a lack of light or an abundance of a specific essential nutrient. They are then making observations every week for nine weeks, comparing the growth and death of any organisms in their bottles. This lab not only allows students to apply their understanding of several topics in class, but also allows students to become invested in their lab and results. Having more materials means that more students can do field work and have their own experiments running, rather than being in large lab groups where not everyone may be able to participate at each stage.\r\n\r\nWith the buckets and shovels, students were not only able to more easily carry their samples for the above lab, but we were able to gather soil sample for nutrient tests in class. As this is one fo the first planned experiments student complete for my class, it is more fun when more students can have a hands on experience to show that environmental science is one where we get down in the dirt regularly. There is a difference between telling students this and students believing that learning happens not only in a classroom, but in the woods and everyday when you walk out into the world. I like to have that thought cemented early on in the class, and these materials help me achieve that goal.\r\n\r\nI appreciate the support for both my classroom and public education in general, and hope you realize that your donation could have the far reaching effect of lighting a passion in a student that will carry them through the rest of their lives.","fullyFundedDate":1724775417602,"projectUrl":"project/lets-get-muddy-wading-into-environment/8444567/","projectTitle":"Let's Get Muddy!
