Many of our students are reluctant readers, so having high interest chapter books is the best way to engage them in something they are hesitant to try. They have already made a big impact on our students!\r\n\r\nThese books arrived just as my 3rd graders were coming to library. I decided to scrap our lesson for the day and let them share in my library joy of unboxing new books and seeing what we were getting. They were SO excited! Students were putting their names in to be the first (and second, and third!) to borrow these new books. And since then, these books have been flying off the shelves! Word got around and so now students are coming to ask for \"those new books\" and kids are reading what they want to read. A 5th grader said, \"I'm actually starting to kind of like reading.\" A 6th grader said, \"You read this?! I've been wanting to read it! Can I borrow it?\" Giving students choice in their books has allowed many to find what they like and engage them in a new way. These are books that truly appeal to our students, and they are flying off our shelves every day. We are slowly creating a library collection that is representative of our student body and providing tools for teachers to share more diverse stories as well. \r\n\r\nOne of my favorite examples of the importance of these books for my students is when a kindergartner grabbed \"Brown Girls Do Ballet\" and was so excited to show her teacher. The funding of our project ensured that the children have enough playdough for the entire school year. The playdough came in a few shipments and each time a new package arrived the children were so excited to see what was in the box and the new colors. The smiles on their faces was priceless.\r\n\r\nWorking and playing with playdough is a favorite activity with the children in my class and is chosen daily during the work period. When working with the playdough one popular thing to do is make a birthday cake for a friend and then sing Happy Birthday. They also enjoy using the dough pushers and pretend to make spaghetti or roll the dough to make pancakes and cookies. While working with the playdough the children also gained communication skills and developing peer friendships. They are interested in what their friends are doing and sharing the experience with them. Your generosity has brought joy to so many, including myself, the classroom staff, and most importantly the students. \r\nThe materials you funded arrived just before school started and we began utilizing them the first day of school. A new classroom can be overwhelming for preschool aged children with special needs. We brought out the bubble machine you funded and that is when the magic happened. The tears stopped, the classroom became calmer, and the children were smiling and laughing. \r\nI am so grateful to have a repertoire of materials to utilize to help students become calm and learn coping strategies, such as breathing with the calm caterpillar.
