My 5th grade students love working with partners and in small groups, especially on the floor where they can spread out. The classroom rug actually builds community in our room, allowing us to have our morning meetings in a circle. Students also spend a considerable amount of time learning on computers each day. Many of our programs have sound and students need their own headphones to concentrate. I am very fortunate to have a reading Nook in my classroom space, but that space is limited to 4-5 students at a time. Here are a couple scenarios I envision thanks to your generosity: an eager group of children on our classroom rug discussing their math findings or discussing our morning meeting topic on perseverance. As well as trying to discuss a Think, Pair, Share writing prompt. Visualize students fully engaged in their learning using computers with headphones. There are no interruptions, just focused learners. There are times students need to engage and interact (class meetings, partner work time), hence the class rug. At other times students require quiet, independent work time while using online learning tools such as computers with headphones for total concentration. By having our rug and headphones for each student, our learning community will be complete.
