One memorable moment was during a recent activity where students observed a demonstration and then used their notebooks to draw labeled diagrams and explain the process in their own words. It was exciting to see them take ownership of their work and refer back to earlier pages to make connections.\r\n\r\nWhen the notebooks were first handed out, many students were genuinely excited to have something that was \"theirs\" to use just for science. Several students flipped through the pages, asked if they could decorate the covers, and immediately began writing in them. For some, this was the first time they had a dedicated space to keep all of their science thinking in one place.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will continue using their notebooks during our upcoming units, where they will record lab data, write claims supported by evidence, and track their progress over time. Many of them asked questions right away and began brainstorming how they wanted to design their volcanoes. The energy in the classroom was noticeably different, students who are usually quiet were engaged, collaborating with their classmates, and fully invested in the activity.\r\n\r\nThrough this project, students were able to connect chemical reactions to real-world phenomena like volcanic eruptions. They practiced teamwork, observation, and scientific reasoning as they predicted outcomes and analyzed what happened during each eruption.\r\n\r\nAs a next step, students will be using what they learned from this activity to study Earth's internal processes and plate tectonics. Students are now able to rewind any video to relearn an activity or for clarification on how an activity should be completed.
