My students attend an urban middle/high school in Western, New York State. My city leads this part of the state in family-homelessness, STD's and teen pregnancy. My children are primarily African- American and Hispanic; however, there is a rainbow of cultural offerings within my roster. My children come from the highest poverty, unemployment and criminality/gang neighborhoods in our area. In the midst of this, my children are sweet, giving and supportive. My children care for one another (and sometimes their teachers) in profound and often awe inspiring ways. However, they are as apt to curse you out one day as to break down into convulsive tears the next. I have a peculiar blessing to help, protect, guide and learn from them.
