I have the pleasure of teaching in an urban elementary school where poverty impedes our student's abilities to read and write and thus be successful. Many of our students have to overcome the affects of poverty (hunger, homelessness, fear, violence), coming to school each day ready to participate in their education. This can be a challenge for many of our students who are already challenged by having low reading skills. Despite this, we as educators still have a job to do - teach our students to read a variety of books. Part of this job entails reading non-fiction text, which can be so difficult for our students. We believe that through targeted instruction, games and activities that focus on building skills such as understanding context clues and main ideas can build non-fiction reading success and comprehension.
