Having water, snacks, tissues, and hygiene supplies readily available has helped create a more comfortable and focused learning environment for my 5th-grade students. Students are more settled throughout the day, especially during longer academic blocks, because they know their basic needs are being supported.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment happened during a collaborative science project on ecosystems. Students worked in teams to research different habitats and create presentations explaining how living things depend on one another for survival. Normally, some students become distracted when they are hungry, thirsty, or not feeling well, but with the snacks and water available, they were able to stay engaged and participate more actively in discussions and group work. It was wonderful to see students confidently sharing ideas, asking questions, and supporting one another throughout the activity.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were incredibly excited and grateful. Many immediately noticed the tissues and snacks and expressed appreciation that the classroom felt more welcoming and prepared for their needs. Several students said it made them feel cared for and comfortable, which was especially meaningful to hear. The hand sanitizer and tissues have also encouraged students to be more mindful about hygiene and keeping our classroom clean.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students are continuing to work on collaborative reading and STEM-based projects that require teamwork, critical thinking, and sustained focus. We are currently preparing for a cross-curricular project where students will research real-world environmental challenges and design creative solutions to present to the class.
