The student transformation began to happen once we had the costumes. Ms. Rodriguez, our Spanish teacher, led the dance rehearsals which the students LOVED, even more than the acting rehearsals. All the students got into character, and our Mirabel, who came from Mexico last year and couldn't speak a word of English, was our lead. She learns by ear, and sang so powerfully at our Winter Concert that I cast her as our lead, but though she was great on the songs, she could not learn all the script dialogue in time. It was very difficult for her, so we just allowed her to carry her script. Our Bruno never showed up for our performance, so we grabbed a student from another class, and he filled in with just one hour of rehearsal, which is why he disappears in one of the scenes, because that actor was unsure of his blocking and afraid to go out in front where the audience could see him.\r\n\r\nWithout the costumes, for which we had no budget, this would NOT have been the highly successful performance that IT WAS. Our alternative was to have the girls wear a nice dress from home, but we knew we would never have the full flavor that we needed. It was such a wonderful experience to see the transformation of the students when the costumes arrived, even the looks on their faces when I called them in one by one for their fittings, the costumes were all the girls could talk about.\r\n\r\nIf we ever do a musical or play again, I will definitely make sure that we get costumes through whatever funding source we can find. The costumes DO HELP the student actors get into character, and allows them to engage more fully and deeply. This impacted our classroom so much that the students were talking about creating a traveling troupe and taking their musical to other places to perform. The excitement and engagement were palpable! A once in a lifetime experience that they will remember the rest of their lives!\r\n\r\nThank you so much DonorsChoose and all the donors, without whose help we would not have been complete.
