Having access to high-quality texts in both languages allowed our students to deepen their understanding and build vocabulary while honoring and developing their bilingual identities. It was incredible to see learning in action as we watched students navigate information, compare texts, and gather facts and shared information in order to write their own animal books.\r\n\r\nThe stencils added an exciting creative element to the project. Students used them to design detailed book covers and to enhance their animal habitat dioramas. This not only helped with developing fine motor skills, but it also encouraged pride, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. This new rug provides our students with their very own clearly defined space to sit during small-group lessons. Furthermore, students are excited about their very own spots which has translated into smoother transitions, improved listening, and increased engagement during read-alouds and small-group lessons. \r\n\r\nIn first grade, structure and physical space play a crucial role in helping students build stamina and self-regulation. This simple addition has strengthened our classroom community by giving students both a sense of belonging and responsibility for their learning space.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the donated SEL books—especially the Little Spot series—have been instrumental in strengthening our classroom community. These stories have helped us emphasize kindness, sharing, empathy, and managing big feelings. Using the donated sketchbooks, quality drawing pencils, markers, paints, and textured papers, students were asked to create a visual piece that represents who they are—their interests, culture, goals, and personality. Before receiving these supplies, students often had to share materials or limit their ideas based on what was available. Now, every student has access to the tools they need to fully explore their creativity. One memorable moment was watching a normally quiet student confidently explain how the colors and symbols in their artwork represented their family and dreams for the future.
