We created more than just colorful shirts—we created happy childhood memories, meaningful connections, and a stronger sense of belonging. Our students had the opportunity to express their personalities, preferences, and creativity through art while working alongside classmates and building community. They were completely immersed in the experience as they planned their designs, folded and twisted fabric, mixed colors, and helped one another. As they planned, they practiced collaboration, problem-solving, decision-making, and fine motor skills. What might appear to be a simple activity of mixing colors and folding fabric became a rich learning experience.\r\n\r\nThis project also provided our students with an authentic opportunity to practice patience and delayed gratification. They patiently waited for their turn to create their shirts and then had to wait an entire weekend while we teachers washed and dried them. When students finally received their clean t-shirts, they were excitement and in awe. They discovered how their colors had blended and changed; they embraced the happy surprises and \"accidents\" in their designs, and watched their individual creations come to life . \r\n\r\nMost importantly, this experience strengthened our first grade community. These books also give scholars opportunities to ask questions, make connections, and use information from a text to support their thinking.\r\nReading in our classroom happens in many different ways. Scholars read independently, with partners, in small groups, and during whole class instruction. The new books give them engaging choices during independent reading and provide meaningful opportunities to practice reading nonfiction for a purpose. It has been exciting to see scholars choose a book because an animal catches their attention and then begin sharing new facts they discovered with their classmates.\r\n\r\nThe headphones have also been extremely helpful. They allow scholars to work more independently when using our digital learning programs, listen to texts and instructional materials, and stay focused without distracting others around them. Having individual headphones makes it easier for scholars to work at their own pace and receive the support they need.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things has been watching the excitement that comes from learning something new.
