Last year we purchased shelves/bins to organize supplies to make it easier for students to access what they need. \r\n\r\nWhile some students will directly ask for help or drop in to get mental health support, other students are sometimes more hesitant. Being able to meet with counseling staff while picking up a wellness item, or just a fidget frequently leads to students forging new relationships with counseling staff that can serve to support them in their time of need. Our students walk into the room and their faces light up when they see something that will support them on their journey. \r\n\r\nWe are currently adding onto student leadership activities this year and are hoping to do more fundraising for student led mentoring trips to build community (we want to go on a whale watch and go to an escape room, and go out to meals together!). This lunch featured the tomatoes and herbs that we grew with some homemade bread and cheese brought in by students.\r\n\r\nWe also raised money through plant sales to create an art contest. We grew plants and sold them at school to fellow students and staff. The money we raised from this we used to sponsor an art contest. Each of my students made a unique sculpture of their favorite food using the clay and various found objects. Students made sushi, mangu, an Albanian dessert, a Cuban sandwich, shrimp pasta, cinnamon rolls...the list goes on, but would've been a lot shorter without some extra help. \r\nThe rest of the supplies were intended to help bring community to my advisory and didn't fail to do so. The materials we received nurture students both physically and emotionally. It was many of their first sketchbooks and they took pride in decorating the covers with their names and illustrations. I have seen students' skill levels and desire to express their emotions through art increase since receiving them. A community of growing artists has formed, sharing sketchbook drawings with one another and creating art that is meaningful to their individual lives.\r\n\r\nThe sensory stickers have been a huge hit and because of your donation we had enough of them to distribute to all students at Humanities Preparatory Academy. Students have put the stickers on their laptops, notebooks and more so they can use them at a moment's notice. Students have additionally been inspired by the colors and designs of the stickers and have used that inspiration when creating their own illustrations.
