In this unit, students will create food sculptures through the lens of environmentalism. Their projects will be critiquing issues that impact our communities, such as waste, pollution, and consumerism. Their work will serve as commentary on dominant cultural values, mass production, advertisements, and the media. Throughout the project, students will take an environmentally-conscious approach to their artmaking. Students will use found objects (trash!) alongside materials like Sculpey and plaster. Additionally, advanced students will use ArtResin, which has less impact on the environment than traditional epoxy resins. They will be encouraged to repurpose as many found or discarded materials in their work as they can.
