They were genuinely excited and curious as I unpacked the snacks—some helped me organize them, others immediately offered ideas about how we could share and save them for \"long class days.\" I could see the smiles spreading across their faces; it wasn't just about the food, it was the message that someone cared about their well-being.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments came during a recent College Now – College Algebra after-school class. My students had just finished a full day of high school classes and were gearing up to take a challenging test in the college course. They looked exhausted but determined. Before we began, I quietly placed a basket of snacks—granola bars, crackers, and small treats—on each table. The surprise drew instant reactions: \"Wait, are these for us?\" one student asked, eyes wide. Another said, \"Wow, thank you, I really needed this right now.\"\r\n\r\nDuring the test, I could see them gradually relax. I've started bringing them to my Math Regents Review Club, which meets on Friday afternoons and even on Saturdays. Those sessions are always tough—by the end of the week, everyone is tired, and attendance can be a challenge. But once students knew snacks would be available, more of them began showing up, staying longer, and participating more actively. They say things like, \"It's easier to study when you don't feel hungry,\" or \"This helps me keep my energy up.\" It's amazing how something as simple as a snack can change the atmosphere from weary to welcoming.\r\n\r\nThese moments remind me how important it is to care for students not only academically but also emotionally and physically. When students feel cared for, they respond with gratitude, motivation, and resilience. The snacks you provided helped make our classroom a more nurturing and encouraging space—one where students can focus on learning rather than hunger.\r\n\r\nAs for next steps, my students are continuing to build their confidence in math, preparing for college-level work and upcoming exams. I plan to keep using snacks as a motivational tool for after-school programs and academic support sessions. I regularly use this machine to add labels and decorations to areas of the room. This year we have a menagerie of arthropods we are using for behavior experiments and animal care. It's important (at least to me) that their enclosures look neat and welcoming, so I was able to cut out some really snazzy labels. I am looking forward next to students naming our critters. They will design the labels for the enclosures for \"Bob\" \"Buggy\" or whatever they come up with. Between a year-long sabbatical and moving schools, I finally was able to bring this project to a new group of students. The donation you made of these new gel electrophoresis boxes was instrumental in the completion of our work. Students collected, filtered, copied and finally used these boxes to visualize their own DNA. \r\n\r\n The results from there were equally as stunning. Everyone compared their DNA sequences to one another, and resoundingly a pattern emerged: DNA does not follow the racial divisions we often ascribe to one another. It is a powerful moment when science upends long-held assumptions about how the world works. My students walked away feeling a deep sense of connection with each other. They also are prepared to face down racial injustice with the simple fact that it is a lie made up to give power to some and deny it to others. \r\n\r\n Your donation made this moment possible.
