One of the most impactful additions has been a class set of small whiteboards and dry erase markers. Students use these during mini lessons to practice writing and show their thinking, and they have become an essential tool for quick, informal assessment. I can easily gauge student understanding by having them write their responses and hold up their boards, which helps me adjust instruction in real time to meet their needs.\r\n\r\nWe were also able to purchase extra markers, ensuring we will remain well-stocked for the rest of this year and into next year. In addition, we now have a supply of colored pencils that students use across many lessons and projects. For example, during a recent unit on nature, students used them to color detailed trioramas and write about their learning—an activity they thoroughly enjoyed.\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most exciting addition for students has been the new furniture for our dollhouse. It has quickly become a favorite during free time and is also an important part of our family and house units. Even our fifth graders were eager to use it! The dollhouse provides a fun, low-risk way for students to practice conversational skills, use new vocabulary and sentence structures, and ask and answer questions. They also make it easier for students to sit closer to the Promethean board when needed. Most recently, students used them to create trigrams of Egyptian pyramids during our unit on ancient civilizations.
